Collections

Amazing the things we gather and collect over the years. Take the music and video field for instance. How many DVDs and music CDs do we have at home? Have we listened to all of them more than once? How many times can we see the same DVD feature movie; or the Series of that famous TV show we like?

Time was when all these movies were on VHS tapes; and our music collection was either cassette tapes or old vinyl. Then the system changed; and we had to change too.

Now it’s DVDs and CDs soon to be replaced by Blu-Ray, MP3s and a variety of other formats no doubt.

And there’s also all those photos we took with our modern cameras. In the old days it was a film which had to be developed and printed on paper. It cost money – so we were careful how many photos we took. Now it’s digital and we can click away to our heart’s content and put all these photos on CDs and build a large collection which we see once and then forget about it.

I wonder, will there be time in Heaven to sit back and see all those DVD movies we never have time to watch? Or our favourite TV shows which ran for several Series? Or all those photos we took of all the holidays and events we went to? And listen to all our music collections we amassed over the years?

And will they have a machine in Heaven which runs all formats regardless whether your memories are saved on Betamax, VHS or the latest digital system?

And how about our lovely shoe collection? One pair for each occasion? Or our lovely handbags … dresses … hats … ties … sets of golf clubs … watches … and numerous other things we buy and collect over a lifetime?

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in Heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Matthew 6: 19-21.

  1. Victor,
I have a massive book collection...and I mean MASSIVE. Some of them are in storage and for some reason I have trouble "letting them go" despite the age of some of these books. There are so many books in my home that Randy bought me a Kindle because I was having trouble finding enough room for all of them and we can't fit anything else in the extra storage space we rent. I realize I can't take them with me when I go :) So, how about you Victor? Do you "collect" anything in particular?

My parents owned a bookstore when I was young. When they sold regular books it did very well. When they converted it to a Christian bookstore it went out of business a few years later. What does this tell you about people's interest in God?

  2. Hi Mary,

I do have some old tapes of programs I made when I was on the radio years ago. I did a variety of programs. "Time for Reflections" was a Christian program on Sundays and "The Aardvark Show" was a mix of comedy and music; amongst other programs.

The problem with tapes is that they deteriorate with age. So I tried to re-master some of them onto digital CDs. I alsi have a small collection of CDs and DVDs but have little time to listen/watch them.

There's nothing wrong with having plenty of books. Books are a window to the world and I know you have my book too; so that's not bad!

What is bad is that Christian shops are closing down. We had two very good ones in our small town of 85,000 people. Now we have none.

We have night clubs though ... and they're opening a lap dancing club soon.

As for Kindle. I've considered putting my book on Kindle - it seems expensive though. I'll have to research this more, because my book was published in the US, so I don't know how to Kindle it.

    God bless.

  3. Speaking of clubs with strippers - we had one that opened up in our city and each time I drove by it I would pray, "Lord, please shut that place down. It doesn't belong in your city." I must have prayed this simple prayer hundreds of times and I was discouraged to see that the parking lot was usually filled. And then one day - it simply shut down. It closed its doors for good and I was glad :) It made me wonder how many other people were asking the Lord to shut it down too. I'm sure most of the women in town!
I remember when we discussed your radio shows on your blog last year as well as some local plays you performed in. I didn't know that the name of the radio show was the same as your blog though. The Aardvark Show must have been funny - you have a great sense of humor!

  4. Hi Mary,

I'm so glad your prayers were answered and the club shut down.

I named this Blog "Time for Reflections" in memory of my radio program. On the Aardvark Show we played pre-recorded comedy tapes as well as performed our own comedy live - e.g. interviews, sketches etc ...

    God bless.

  5. Victor,

I have some collections: jewellery, music, movies etc. Somehow I lost interest in them all. Probably just as well as we were running out of room to store them! These days I collect computer files: word documents, photos, ebooks... At least they take up less space.

  6. That's the problem Sue. Lack of room to store things in.

Thankfully, our minds have plenty of room for happy, and sometimes sad, memories.

    God bless you and yours.

  7. Hi Victor,

What a wonderful blog, and lesson. I started to wonder about "stuff", and who would want all of it after I am gone, so years ago, I started to go through my things once a year and give away the things that I don't need or use.

I had collected buttons, books, bobbles, pencils, pens, pin on buttons, stickers and the rocks my husband brings home to me.

The books remain as well as the rocks, many of which are placed in my flower garden.

I want people to feel at home when they come to visit us, and we're very simple, laid back people.

If ya don't use it, ya don't really need it.

    Joey

  8. Hello Joey,

I agree. As best we can we should give away the things and items we no longer need. It's amazing how much we accumulate over the years.

    God bless.
